SPO wannabe.
Around 2 years ago I was on my way to school one rainy morning when I saw a skinny adult black cat meowing like crazy. This happened in the center of Madrid, where there are no parks near, and just by the side of a very dangerous road, so I took the kitty home lest it be run over by a car. Since we already had three cats of our own my husband and I accommodated the kitty on a locked bathroom (only place on the house with a door), took him to the vet for a checkup, neutered him and proceeded to post ads for the cat all over the internets. The kitty was a complete sweetheart, affectionate and loving without getting to be annoying. And he was super cute, specially after we fed him so he got shinier and less skinny. We were totally in love with him but we couldn't keep him because we had too many cats already, and our older cat has issues accepting new cats in the house. Sadly, an adult short hair black cat is difficult to adopt out, so we were losing hope of finding him a home when finally a lady called and said she wanted to meet him, and here's were the stupidity comes. The lady came to our house and we showed her the cat. She told us she was a ballet dancer and spent a lot of time outside, and she lived alone. Not a good start. She made a few comment about cats being elegant and graceful and it sounded like she was thinking of cats more like an ornament than a living being. She had never had a cat and wanted one because she thought they didn't need much attention. That alone ringed some alarm bells, so we told her that our cat was very loving and wouldn't take well to spending a lot time alone. We mentioned that cats go better in pairs that alone... and then one of my own cats came down the stairs and the lady started cooing over her and saying she was beautiful. We were like "Yes, OUR cat is cute, but look, here's the cat you came to see! He's cute as well!". Then she started asking questions about how much did it cost to maintain a cat, and she seemed inordenately preoccupied by the cost of kitty litter. And by now we were just horrified: if you can't afford kitty litter, how do you expect to afford food? and what will you do if the cat gets sick or breaks a bone? And finally she told us that since we had said it was better to have two cats than one alone, why didn't we give her the other cat too? WTF LADY SHE'S MY CAT!!!! If you can ask a complete stranger to give you her cat you clearly have no idea of the kind of relationship people have or at least should have with their pets! Luckily she seemed to realise she wasn't ready to adopt an animal and told us she needed to think about it, saving us the trouble of telling her we didn't want to give her the cat. As it happens, later the kitty came down with FUS (vet bill was more than 400€) and now he has to eat expensive special food for the rest of his life. If we had given her the cat she wouldn't have been able to afford the vet bills and the cat would be dead. |

A collection of little things
I have a new found appreciation for my roommates dogs after coming and visiting my family. Don't get me wrong, they're all fed and watered and played with and they get their shots. But they aren't trained. AT ALL. My dads dog is a sweetheart but she's an outside dog who loves to roll around in the dirt and play in the mud. She also loves to jump up on you. My grandparent's two dogs are always in the kitchen begging when people are cooking (something my roommates two dogs NEVER do) and one of them is obscenely over weight. She's a long hair chihuahua and she's almost as wide as she is long. We went to drop my sister off at a playdate and they had a little terrier schnauzer mix who kept bouncing around my legs while I was walking. I can't believe I took all that amazing training for granted. When I get back I'm going to take great joy in the fact that they wait to be INVITED to jump up and the couch and into your lap. Kids at dog parks
this is a pet peeve of mine, and while it's not that folks are being stupid with their 4legged animals, it's the 2leggeds that worry me. Why do people bring kids to a dog park? Especially kids under, say, ten years old? I know as an adult going into a place full of dogs I don't know that it IS possible I could be bitten or even accidentally injured by an overly enthusiastic dog. I'm only 5'0, and not a big person at all, and there are kids out there bigger than me, but I (hopefully) have the sense to be aware of my surroundings, etc. I have 4 dogs, one does not go to dog park as she's aggressive with dogs other than the ones she lives with. But just because I have that sense doesn't mean other folks do, and I have stories to prove it. So if two dogs get into it, and the kid is nearby or runs up to help...there's so many reasons a kid shouldn't be there, I can't list them all. Am I just being old and crotchety, and not seeing a valid reason for endangering one's kids like this, or am I on-target? Thanks :) |

Madison with her toy :) (with bonus Winston)
Hello :) My name is Heather and I'm new here. I have two lovable pit bulls which I love to pieces. They are the best thing that has ever happened to me :) But I am here to post a picture relating to this week's theme and share my babies with you guys :) This is Madison, she is about 6 weeks old and she is a little black and white girl. The newest member of the family. She is playing with her lil pink rope :) And this is her and her big brother, Winston :) Winston is a red nosed brindle who was left in the middle of the street at 4 weeks old! Luckily he is with me now and a very healthy just 6 month old boy :) Thanks :) I'm sure I'll be posting more soon! |

Kidney failure cat
Yesterday we were at a friend's house for dinner. Said friend, H, is a cat man, in the sense that somehow all the strays in the neighborhood find their way into his house at some point, and he feeds them. He has a cat flap, so cats can just come and go as they please. So at any time of the year he'll have between 2 and 10 cats hanging around, eating food and then disappearing for a week or a month or a year and sometimes forever. I don't like that "his" cats aren't cared for beyond having a plate of food 24/7, but on the other hand, they aren't his cats, exactly--they just kind of wander in and make themselves at home. ( poor sick kitty )Bonus stupid: they also just got a puppy about a year ago. Said puppy is very cute, very sweet--and very very untrained. My boyfriend's dad's dogs, for instance, all knew to sit when they were told, and the command for "lie down" meant "go to your bed and lie down". This dog...well, it's good with cats, and that's about all I can say for it. H's idea of disciplining the dog seems to be grabbing it by the scruff until it yelps, and forcing it to sit. |

Ugh, I really should not be checking Craigslist after the holidays. So many "My husband/wife got me this puppy/kitten as a surprise for Christmas, but oh noes it doesn't fit in with our family." Sadly, I think one of them is my old friend's ad...she's pregnant with her second child and has a toddler and the last thing she wanted was a puppy (they already have 2 dogs and 3 kitties)...but what does her husband do? Gets her a puppy he found at a pet store (gah) because he thought she'd think it was cute. .... I don't understand how one can get a puppy (or any animal, for that matter) on a whim. I love dogs, but I know I work wayy too much to have one. Maybe someday. And to not discuss it with your spouse? "Oh hey, honey, I know you're raising our toddler, are pregnant, and take care of 5 animals, but can I throw a puppy into the mix?" So now this poor puppy needs a new home. And there are so many ads like that. I went to a pet store today for some cat litter and they had an ad up. It was a woman getting a golden retriever pup with a bow on its head that read: "Surprise her this holiday season!" *headdesk* |

Anti-BSL Position Statement by the ASPCA ASPCA Position Statement on Breed Specific Legislation--strongly-opposed to BSL! (via badrap_blog): "...in light of the absence of scientific data indicating the efficacy of breed-specific laws, and the unfair and inhumane targeting of responsible pet guardians and their dogs that inevitably results when these laws are enacted, the ASPCA instead favors effective enforcement of a combination of breed-neutral laws that hold reckless dog guardians accountable for their dogs' aggressive behavior...." I don't agree with every point, but this is a well-researched, fantastic position statement overall. (The "Background" section may well provide a lot of you with excellent backing for your own anti-BSL positions. :) |

sleeping
My dogs all like to sleep up in the bedroom, either in the bed with us or on the floor. One of my dogs has recently decided he would rather sleep on the sofa in the living room. When I get up and go downstairs to take the puppy he'll get up and go up to bed whether or not I go back upstairs. He seems otherwise healthy, normal, not acting strange. Any idea why he might be not wanting to sleep upstairs anymore? Nothing's changed but the sheets. |

Hey, Another Stupid Question...
I'm cooking Christmas dinner today (yeah, yeah, I expect I'll be late for me own funeral too) and my question is the innards of the turkey: neck, kidneys, heart and liver. Will this be a stupendous, most awesome and better than peanut-butter-covered-milkbones-inna-KON G! treat for the dog (and cats), or is this a no-no because bird yuck contains, well, bird yuck. It is the body's filter for heavy elements and waste products afterall. Or should I wait and give them bits of the breast and legs when I boil it down for stewp in a couple of days and just use the yuck to boil and make a bit more liquid for gravy? (Possibly you can deduct from this that I don't cook very often. Heh. It's one of those things I prefer to leave to the Critter.) |

vaccines are bad?
ok so not a real "oh no they didn't' post but discussion and question. so now looking around the internet i see a bunch if people in their outcrys about vaccinations for pets. they are harmful, unnecessary and, just "no" so, how does one care for and manage that life style? how does someone keep a dog without rabies shots? I can see raw diets but this 100% natural life, of raw whole animals and no vacciations. do you get fined for not having your dog getting shots? is it better to do that and feed them right? on a forum somewhere someone said their raw fed dogs never get sick and never need shots. if you watch them like helicopter parents i guess parvo and distemper and rabies aren't needed are these people idiots or know their right stuff? humans are sick and over vaccinated and we torture our dogs and cats with the same fate. i guess if a cat lives indoors and your dog never gets out of your site offleash then they don't need to have them... |

SPO Boyfriend
So I went visiting friends for a couple of days this week, and I come home and my cat is bawling. It's obvious that she's gotten no attention whatsoever, her litterbox is full, her water is brackish and she's got no food. My boyfriend says that he fed her, but he gave her a can of wet food a day. This makes me angry because I picked up some wet food to supplement the dry food that he was supposed to pick up and apparently never did. So she's been getting ONE CAN of food a day. Did I mention she's nursing? Her kittens are only three weeks old and they are sucking her dry. I told him she needed to be able to eat whenever the hell she wants, and he said that there was no reason for her to need to pig out like that. SHE IS NURSING! She DOES need to eat whenever she wants, goddammit. She's skinnier than she was when I left and currently searching the room for some morsel of food. Really fucking sucks when I thought I could depend on him for something as small as taking care of my cat and he can't even do that. Ugh. I'm getting food for her after I come home from work today, but I feel like a horrible pet owner for not being able to get her food now. Edit: This is really the tip of the iceberg with the problems I'm having with him, and when I called him to ask WHY my cat was only getting one can of food a day, he said that I had told him to give her one. And I had, but following that was "...to supplement the dry food that you need to go pick up for her." But apparently I'd only told him to give her a can a day, so we ended up having a semi-serious conversation and I told him that as it stood, I didn't want to be with him anymore. I can deal with taking things out on ME, but you do not get to pull innocents into the line of fire, especially not when one is my nursing mother cat and her kittens. So I'm done. |

Licking
My Samwise has been licking his right front paw between the pads quite a lot the last few days. It's very red, though it isn't raw and it doesn't appear to be hurting - at least he's let me look at it and didn't pull away when I looked closely and pulled the pads apart. Is there something I can put on to prevent him from licking his foot until he makes it raw, or should I just tell him no when I catch him and not apply anything? So, the Manx we picked up and have been caring for started cratering in the past couple of days. He ask (begged) a vet friend of our come in on Christmas Eve to give her a quick evaluation about what could have been wrong since she had been appearing to be getting better. She said that chances are, the Manx's liver or kidney's were failing. We couldn't get the cat anywhere to get care on Christmas but we managed to get her into the emergency vet's this morning.... but we didn't make it. The Manx died last night. Even though she died way too young and led anything but a charmed life, at least she died being warm and cared for. ;.; We're happy enough that she got at least some level of comfort before passing on. After we buried the manx, my mom and I called Animal services to see where we stood on taking care of the rest of these guy's animals since they haven't come to get any of them. We've been giving the dog food and water but the dog is still tied up outside with no shelter and this has been going on for over a week now, I think. Of course we got an answering machine when we called, so we hope they'll get back to us on Monday? Maybe? Hopefully? We have pictures and vet reports on the manx, and pictures of the dog the guy has tied up in his yard. The rest of this guy's cats LOOK fine, but we can't catch them to make sure. ;;; What I still fail to understand is WHY this guy has these animals in the first place. If he's gone 90% of the time and admitted not getting care for them during his absences... whats the fucking point of owning animals? |

Cornelius the puppy needs help on Christmas Cornelius is an approximately 8-month-old pit bull mix puppy. He was found wandering in the middle of a busy road on Christmas Eve. Covered in gasoline, he was originally thought to be black. Once cleaned up, a handsome brown dog was revealed. Cornelius is suffering from demodex mange ( click here for additional photos showing the extent of the mange--be warned, the photos may be upsetting). He's itchy and uncomfortable, yet still in good spirits. He's a friendly and enthusiastic puppy, and does not appear to be terribly reactive to dogs or cats. What he really wants is to just play with squeaky toys. The people who saved him from traffic and cleaned him up cannot keep him for long. They are renters and not allowed to have pit bulls (or pit mixes). If the landlord finds out, Cornelius will be forced to go to the local pound. The pound will keep him for a short SEVEN DAYS before euthanizing. They do NOT rehabilitate pit bulls in this condition. Rescues have been contacted and either cannot accept pit bulls or are overwhelmed. Therefore, this poor pup needs a warm place to stay and heal. Can you help?Cornelius is in the Orlando, FL., area. The people who took him in are willing to drive him pretty far to keep him safe and get him the help he needs. If you can help, please send an e-mail to whereismybreakfast@gmail.com Thank you! |
